Hugin Expert A/S has existed since 1989 and is the leading company in developing software for advanced decision support based on complex statistical models, Bayesian Networks (BN). For over a decade we have created development tools and software utilizing BN-technology, and our software products are used in decision support, medical diagnostics, troubleshooting, risk analysis and safety assessment. Hugin software employs the most exact and efficient algorithm for updating probabilities. The algorithm was developed by the group behind Hugin Expert, and was published by Steffen L. Lauritzen of Aalborg and David Spiegelhalter of Cambridge in the Journal of the Royal Statistcal Association in 1988. In 1989 the algorithm won the ”Outstanding Application Award” from the American Statistical Society.

Today Hugin Expert’s main business is providing our customers with tools that help add intelligence to their products and services. For over 15 years we have collaborated with some of the world’s largest software companies, and our BN technology has been utilized in virtually every area of software development. Based on this experience, Hugin offers the Hugin Technology Partnership. Simultaneously, Hugin Expert will explore new areas for growth and development and will introduce new products on an ongoing basis, protecting new product developments suitable for patenting or trademarks.

This high level of ambition requires a solid foundation, which has been created by a strong group of owners – among them, Hewlett-Packard. This gives Hugin the platform it needs to realize its visionary plans for growth.

Hewlett-Packard’s purchase of 45% of Hugin Expert in 1988 was not only an equity investment, but a joint research and development venture. According to Jim Schreckengast at Hewlett-Packard, “Hugin Expert’s products are quite simply the best in the industry. They have the highest performance Bayesian belief inference engine and the most scaleable design. They maintain close ties to state-of-the-art research in the field, and incorporate the latest innovations in their products. We partner with Hugin Expert because we know their products can give us an edge in creating smart e-services. Most of these e-services demand that context, experience, risk and uncertainty are rationally factored into the decision-making process. Bayesian belief network technology, and Hugin’s products in particular, excel in this regard.”

Hugin Expert attracts top engineers - and keeps them, because of the challenging projects it takes on and its dynamic development environment. The key employees at Hugin are all joint owners of the company, and are therefore interested in its continual growth and development.

Hugin Expert is based in Aalborg, Denmark, strategically located in the heart of the world’s largest BN-community. It maintains close links to the University of Aalborg, and has a very strong international orientation with 90% of its business going to the export market.
